The 80th anniversary of the commissioning of the USS Yorktown (CV-10) is Saturday April 15, 2023. Originally constructed as the USS Bon Homme Richard, she was renamed Yorktown after the USS Yorktown (CV-5) was sunk. USS Yorktown (CV-10) was commissioned April 15, 1943.
To commemorate the 80th anniversary, the club is planning on operating a special event station that day from the club station. The current plan is to start operating about 10 AM until about 4 PM (Patriots Point closes at 5 PM). The day also happens to be a regular CARS operating day (third Saturday of each month).
Patriots Point will also have activities going on to celebrate the anniversary, so you could also bring the family and make a day of it.
Five years ago, a similar special event station was put on to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Yorktown’s commissioning. That went fairly well, getting 55 contacts in the log before thunderstorms rolled in and forced us off the air.
