ARMED FORCES DAY – May 13, 2023 Aboard USS YORKTOWN (CV-10) NWKJ

The Armed Forces Day Crossband Test details were posted on the WWW.DODMARS.ORG
website. The event was mentioned in the ARRL Letter dated 20 April 2023, with a link to
the DODMARS website, but was not listed in QST, as has been past practice. (The ARRL
letter contained a mistake in dates. First it said 13 May, which was correct. A later
paragraph erroneously said 20 May.)

As has been done for many years, AFD operations were conducted using the Charleston
Amateur Radio Society (CARS/WA4USN) facility on the YORKTOWN. It is located in what
formerly was the ship’s Emergency Steering Room (indicated by the five portholes in the
bow – see the underway photo, above).

Vertical antennas were erected on the forward Port and Starboard corners of the flight
deck. Two ICOM-7300 transceivers modified for DOD frequency transmission were used.
Calls were made using YORKTOWN’s international call sign NWKJ on assigned transmitting
frequencies: 4,027.0 kHz, 7,360.0 kHz and 14,438.5 kHz, all USB.

Amateurs were directed to respond on specified frequencies in the associated ham bands.
No activity was heard on the 75M band, so operations were limited to the 40M and 20M
bands. Eighty-six contacts were made: 65 on 40M and 21 on 20M.
